Undersized Geothermal Ground Loops (Short Looped)

Ground source heat pumps require heat exchange with the ground, which has sufficient capacity to withstand the seasonal loads to which it will be exposed. With a closed loop system, the heat exchanger is embedded in the ground and will only affect the area in which it is embedded. If the rate of heat exchange with the ground is too low for the system requirements, the heat pump will have reduced efficiency and capacity or may reach a point where it will not work at all.

If a geothermal heat pump system cannot operate as designed due to a lower than acceptable inlet water temperature, this is most often due to a short loop situation. The heat pump may be locking up at low pressure or may actually freeze the heat transfer fluid inside the ground coil inside the heat pump.
Short loops are not always short loops because it is not always a matter of lack of pipes in the country. There could be other problems giving us short circuit symptoms.

The problem is the reduced ability to exchange heat. This could be if the loop lengths are too short. It is possible that the loop field is too dense. It is possible that the loop in the distributor is bent or crushed. It is possible that the pipe is not installed or sealed properly and there are air holes surrounding the pipe. If the system is not properly purged of air, there may be an air bubble in one of the loops preventing flow through it. The flow centers or pump system may not be pumping fluid through the loops fast enough to create the turbulent flow needed to get full capacity out of the system.

The best way to avoid an improperly sized or constructed ground loop is to make sure your installer has experience.

The ground loop is the most critical part of the system and it is very difficult to change things with it in the future.
