Sending Flowers – But You Would Like Them To Last Longer?

There’s nothing worse than paying the bill for beautiful flowers only to hear they didn’t last long. If the flowers are very fresh when delivered, you can actually help them last a lot longer than they otherwise would.

Trick no. 1: Some florists will provide flower food in a small packet that goes with the flowers. While adding this to vase water will help some, I don’t think it works as well as my “flower bouquet cocktail” I’ve developed over the years.

Cocktail bouquet of flowers

  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Clorox bleach
  • Spring water

Place 1/2 cup of spring water in a Pyrex (glass) measuring cup. Microwave on high for 30 to 60 seconds (until heated through). Add the sugar and stir until it is completely dissolved. Pour spring water directly into a clean flower vase. Pour the water mixture into it. Then pour one teaspoon. bleach and gently mix in water in a vase with a long thin utensil.

Trick no. 2: This applies to cutting stems. I first put the vase on the edge of the counter so that I could easily know the right height and the place where I would cut the stems of the flowers. When cutting the stems, use a sharp knife and do so diagonally (so that more of the “cocktail” goes into the stem). I’ve been told that for roses in particular, it’s best to cut under running water. For all flowers, the freshly cut stem should be immediately placed in the “cocktail”. And, even if you don’t really want to change the height of a particular stem, cut the end of it as described here to make it easier to assemble the “cocktail”.

Trick no. 3: The last trick is to save the stems when they start to fade. You really want to do this before the petals start to go completely limp and fall off. This is something I do for very complex, beautiful flowers that also dry well.

You will need what I call rose bottles. These are water containers that are shaped like test tubes and have a flat rubber or plastic top with a criss-cross slot into which the florist inserts a flower (usually a long rose) that is part of a bouquet that is being prepared for packaging in a box. delivery. I keep these bottles whenever I get roses this way. You can also go to a craft store or potentially a flower shop and buy them.

In advance, I determine the number of possible flowers that can be harvested and prepare the bottles by pouring the “cocktail” into them to the top. I put them in a coffee mug on the kitchen counter.

Then, every morning and evening (and afternoon, if I’m at home), I look for flowers that are “ready”. For each one that is, I take it out of the vase and cut it to a 4- to 5-inch stem, with a diagonal cut. This is immediately placed in the prepared vial.

Each of these flowers is then placed in a kind of retirement home. It can be in a wicker basket with a few pots of live leafy plants or perhaps in a ceramic pot which is very suitable for flowers of this height. This is where your creativity can really come to the fore! What do you have in which these flowers (which often have many other colors) will look beautiful? Honestly, I’m having a lot of fun doing this. You’ll be surprised how wonderful these retirement arrangements can be!

Every day for a week you will move these flowers to their new home. It is not unusual for this new arrangement to look good for many weeks to come! If the drying process works particularly well (and this is greatly helped by a cocktail slowly disappearing in the bottles), you may even want to keep one of these arrangements indefinitely!

On the other hand, if you’re not completely committed to sending flowers as a gift, there are always other gift alternatives to consider that have lasting power right out of the gate!
