An Unfolding of Robert Frost’s "Design"

“I’ve always wanted to be very observant,” Robert Frost once said, after reading his poem “Design” to an audience. Then he added, “But I was always afraid of my own observations.” What could Frost have noticed that could have frightened him? Let’s take a look at the song in question and see what we discover.

Starting with the title “Design”, any reader of this poem will find it full of meaning. As Webster’s new world dictionary defines “design,” the word can mean, among other things, a plan or “a purpose; an intention; a goal.” Some arguments for the existence of god (I remember from Sunday school) are based on the “argument from design”; that since the world exhibits a systematic order, there must be a designer who made it. But the word design can also mean “a secret or sinister scheme”—as we attribute to “a person who designs.” As we shall see, Frost’s poem includes all of these meanings. His poem asks the old philosophical question of whether there is a designer, and an evil designer, or whether there is no designer at all. Frost probably read William James on this issue, as the critic has convincingly shown.

Like many other sonnets, “Design” is divided into two parts. The first eight lines draw a picture centered on a spider, which at first seems almost cheerful. It is pitted and thick like a baby or Santa Claus. It stands on a wild flower whose name, panacea, seems ironic: panacea is supposed to cure every disease, but it certainly doesn’t have the power to bring a dead moth back to life. In this second line we also discover that the spider is holding another creature. We might at once feel sorry for the moth, were it not for the simile applied to it in the third line: “like a white piece of stiff satin cloth.” suddenly the moth becomes not a creature but a piece of cloth – and yet satin has the connotation of beauty. Satin is a luxurious material used in rich formal wear, such as coronation gowns and bridal gowns.
