Less Known Amish Trivia

With the execution-style murders of five Amish schoolgirls, the lesser-known and isolated community has once again come into the media spotlight. Everyone everywhere talks about the Amish beliefs, customs, peaceful nature, ability to forgive and incredibly simple way of life. With so much being written and read about them, there is nothing new to say. But after some deeper research and digging, I found some lesser known trivia about the Amish community.

We always thought the Amish didn’t use technology. The Amish use disposable diapers, gas grills, ice skates and cell phones! They use machines that run on batteries, not electricity. The Amish can ride in cars and buses, but they cannot own them.

The Amish are not only engaged in agriculture. They are skilled in woodworking. Amish furniture, made of solid wood, is very popular throughout the USA. To make wholesale Amish furniture, they use modern machinery powered by sometimes ingenious combinations of diesel engines used to drive hydraulic and air pumps that replace the electric motor.

Amish young men and women begin their search for a spouse when they turn sixteen. A young man asks his girlfriend to marry him, but instead of a diamond ring he gives her china or a watch.

Amish women wear blue to their weddings. Navy blue, sky blue and shades of purple are the most popular colors worn by Amish brides. Her wedding dress becomes her Sunday church outfit after marriage. She will also be buried in the same dress when she dies. No one in the wedding party carries flowers. The groom wears a black suit, white shirt, black shoes and socks, a bow tie, tall black shoes, and a black hat with a three and a half inch brim. There is no godfather or best man.

Amish wedding dates are limited to November and part of December, when the harvest is over and the harsh winter has not yet arrived. Most weddings take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Monday, Wednesday and Friday are used as preparation or cleanup days. Saturdays are not used as wedding days to avoid work or cleaning the next day, Sunday.

The couple spends their first night together at the bride’s home because they have to get up early the next day to help clean the house. The couple lives in the bride’s parents’ house until they start their own home next spring.

Amish women never cut their hair, which they wear in a bun on the back of their head. They wear a white prayer cover on their head if they are married and a black one if they are single. Earlier, women wore flat straw hats.

The Amish do not shave their beards after they marry; a long beard is the hallmark of an adult Amish. Mustaches are associated with the military and are therefore forbidden among the Amish.

Because so many Amish have the same name, a person is sometimes identified by the name of his parents and grandparents, such as “Amos’s John’s Sammy” or “Jake’s Suziena Mary”. Sometimes a man even gets a nickname from his wife’s name.

Smoking pipes and cigars is an accepted practice. However, cigarettes are seen as ‘secular’. Older men seem to have more ‘rights’ to chew or smoke than young men. Some use modern lighters. In the past, it was common for older women to smoke the pipe.

The carriage, or buggy as we non-Amish call it, may not have changed much in design, but now the body of the carriage is mostly made of fiberglass rather than wood.

The Amish use car batteries and other alternative sources to power their machines. The new machines were the first to be used because the manually operated ones broke down, they were old and could not be replaced because they were no longer produced. To recharge such batteries, some Amish use solar panels, which can charge a 12 V battery in about seven days.

The Amish have been using telephones for years. Before they were common in the home, they were used in the city. Later, as they became more common, a phone box or phone shack was often built outside and shared by several neighbors. Many Amish businesses relied on answering machines or services, or instructed their patrons to call at a specific time when they would be at an outside phone.

The Amish will never cease to amaze us. Their resilience and inner strength will continue to amaze us for years to come.
