Plant Growth Stages – How Plants Grow

The growth stages of plants mirror other living things with an initial, reproductive, and terminal phase, except that some plants have an additional dormant phase. The terms for these phases are: vegetative, reproductive, senescence and dormancy.

Beginning as a seed, a plant seed is similar to a fertilized egg. It contains food storage for new plant life and a protective outer shell. In the first phase of plant growth, the vegetative phase, the seedling absorbs moisture and nutrients from the internal food storage within the seed. When the plant absorbs food from the seed and begins to grow a root stalk and a shoot that becomes leaves, it breaks through the protective wall of the seed and begins to grow. The root grows into the warm moist earth, and the shoot rises towards the sunlight and warm air. After sprouting, the leaves open and the roots continue to grow and spread. This continues until the seedling plant is fully developed with spreading roots, root hairs and leaves. Roots and leaves absorb moisture and nutrients from soil, water and air.

The next stage of plant growth would be the reproductive stage. At this point, when the seedling matures, it will produce a flower that has male or female parts, or both. The flower contains pollen, which is then transferred to the egg part of the flower and transformed into new seeds, i.e. pods containing seeds, begin to grow to maturity. Pollination can happen with the help of wind, vibrations, insects like bees and animals. Or, humans can artificially breed and cross-breed plants through pollination or joining branches with other plants. The benefit of seed pollination is that genetic diversity can occur, which can aid in survival.

The third stage of growth occurs after new seeds or pods have been produced and spread to create new plant life. That would be senescence or old age in plants. This can be seen in the fall as the leaves on certain deciduous trees change color before they fall. Plants show decay similar to other organisms in old age, such as free radical damage and telomere shortening.

Another phase of growth that differs from aging is the resting phase. At rest, the plant goes into hibernation, which allows it to survive the intense winter conditions and revive in the spring with new growth, without going through the seed stage. This is easily seen in trees, which drop their leaves in autumn and the sap flows upwards, and then the tree remains dormant until new buds emerge in the warmer weather of spring, for the whole cycle to take place year after year until the tree eventually dies. Dormancy can give plants an advantage because they can build on the previous year’s growth instead of starting over from seed. This gives them a competitive advantage in the competition for sunlight and soil, because they are larger.

The stages of plant growth are similar to the growth and decay of other organisms, and they are all part of the chain of life.
