What Makes Your Plasma Television Work

If you’re currently looking to rent or buy a plasma TV, you might want to read on to understand what you’re buying and why you might find it better than a traditional TV. Over the past three quarters of a century, most televisions have been built using the same old technology; cathode ray tube or CRT. In such a model, the device fires a beam of negatively charged particles (electrons) inside a large tube. These electrons then move the phosphor atoms located along the wide end of the tube or screen, causing them to light up. The image on the television screen is created by illuminating different areas of the phosphor coating with different intensity and different colors.

CRTs can produce crisp, colorful images, but their main drawback is that they’re simply large. They take up a lot of space. If you want to enlarge the CRT TV screen, you need to make the tube even bigger so that the ignition device can reach the whole thing. Therefore, it is practically impossible to have a CRT television with a large screen that leaves enough space in the room for viewers.

This is why flat screen plasma TVs have become so popular. Plasma TVs have large screens, comparable to even the largest CRT models, but at a fraction of the thickness (about six inches or 15 centimeters). Plasma TVs use the information in the video signal to illuminate thousands of tiny dots (or pixels) with a beam of high-energy electrons.

Most plasma screens have three colors of pixels evenly distributed on the inner surface: red, green and blue. On a plasma screen, pixels are illuminated to form the image that the viewer sees. The TV can produce any other color by combining the three in different ways and varying the intensity of the light.

These new TVs are named after the main element in their fluorescent lights: plasma. Plasma is a gas composed of free ions (electrically charged atoms) and electrons (negatively charged particles). When the plasma set is turned on, an electric current flows through it, so the electrons rush towards the positively charged areas of the plasma, and the protons in the plasma rush towards the negatively charged areas. Constant collisions between the two excite the plasma, causing them to release light photons; the colors you will eventually see on your screen.

Inside a plasma TV, xenon and neon gases are contained in literally hundreds of thousands of small cells squeezed between long electrodes, which are in turn squeezed between two glass plates. The address electrodes are arranged vertically and form the back layer, and the transparent display electrodes are arranged horizontally along the front. Together they form the basic network.

A plasma screen computer charges electrodes that cut across specific cells to ionize them. This happens thousands and thousands of times within one second. The resulting electric current causes a rapid flow of charged particles and forces gas atoms to release ultraviolet photons. These photons, in turn, interact with the phosphor material lining the inner cell wall. The resulting reaction causes the phosphors in the plasma display to emit colored lights; the three colors we described earlier. Variations in the pulses of current flowing through the electrodes and cells cause hundreds of different combinations of the three colors, and are therefore able to replicate the entire color spectrum.

What’s really important in the end is that manufacturers can use this technology to produce a very wide screen using extremely thin materials. The final product is manageable and spatially acceptable. The resulting screen image is crisp and bright and looks good either way. When plasma TVs first came out, the cost of buying one was really prohibitive for the average person. However, the technology becomes more affordable with each model year. And plasma rental is also becoming very competitive.
