Heart Diseases Part IV – Heart Diseases Affecting Heart Muscles

As we have mentioned in previous articles, heart diseases are caused by high blood pressure which contributes to hardening of the arteries. High levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) build up in the arteries as a result of an uncontrolled diet with high levels of saturated fat and trans fat.

In heart diseases that affect the heart muscles, the heart muscles are stiff, increasing the amount of pressure needed to expand blood to flow into the heart or narrowing the passageways as a result of obstruction of blood flow from the heart.

Heart diseases that affect the heart muscle include:

1. Cardiomyopathy

The heart muscle becomes inflamed and does not work as it should. There can be multiple causes such as high blood pressure, heart valve disease, artery disease, or congenital heart defects.

a) Dilated cardiomyopathy

The heart cavity is enlarged and stretched. Blood flows more slowly through the enlarged heart, causing blood clots to form as a result of the clots sticking to the lining of the heart, breaking away from the right ventricle into the pulmonary circulation in the lungs, or being dislodged and carried into the body’s circulation to form an embolism.

b) Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

The wall between the two ventricles increases, obstructing the flow of blood from the left ventricle. Sometimes the thickened wall distorts one leaflet of the mitral valve, causing it to leak. Symptoms of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy include shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, and angina pectoris.

c) Restrictive cardiomyopathy

The ventricles become excessively stiff, making it harder for them to fill with blood between heartbeats. Symptoms of restrictive cardiomyopathy include shortness of breath, swollen hands and feet.

2. Myocarditis

Myocarditis is inflammation of the heart muscle or weakening of the heart muscle. Symptoms of myocarditis include fever, chest pain, congestive heart failure, and palpitations.
