How to Enjoy Flathead Catfishing

The flathead catfish is a native species of the United States. Although originally native to the Mississippi River, in addition to the larger rivers that flow from it, flatheads have been relocated and are now seen in waters across the US. The ubiquity of flatheads is due to their recognition as food, but also as game. . This fact makes flathead fishing doubly fun.

Flatheads are generally seen in gently flowing waters such as rivers and larger streams, lakes and ponds. They like to live in deep water that includes pieces of fallen logs that offer comfortable hiding places.

The flathead catfish is aptly named for the long, highly compressed head it exhibits. The eyes will be flat and oblong in shape, with a lower lower jaw or jaw that protrudes above the upper jaw. They appear in shades of spotted brown and yellow.

Flatheads weighing between forty and fifty pounds are often hooked in estuaries, rivers and lakes. Flat “cats” weighing more than a hundred pounds were also reportedly landed.

Not long after hatching, flathead catfish develop rapidly. They are considered adults when they reach fifteen to nineteen inches in length and may eventually live for over twenty-five years; continuing to grow throughout life.

These cats will instinctively eat almost anything they can fit in their large jaws; However, fish is a favorite food, and bream is one of their favorites. In addition, they especially like live perch and sunfish; the latter to the point of destroying the population of some species of sunfish, especially in smaller bodies of water or perhaps in non-native water. A number of secondary rivers in the state of Georgia are nearly devoid of redbreast sunfish after the addition of flatfish.

Flat catfish usually eat either in the evening or during the day despite the fact that most catfish are usually more energetic in the evening. By using light these cats are relatively easy to lure as they will go after the bait fish which will gravitate towards the light.

Flatheads prefer deep crevices with protection around the edges of river bends. Try to find large stuck logs, fallen trees and their stumps and stones/rocks. These are the places where they like to hide. Be sure to cast your line under the edges and let the lure drift, then be ready to hold on.

If the outer edges are too rough to fish, scout out some inner bends with a gentler flow. In larger bodies of water such as lakes and reservoirs, look for larger flats in places with lots of cover; submerged brush piles, for example, are preferred hiding places.

Flatheads will occasionally move through the old waterways of rivers and streams within these lakes and reservoirs. During the night, they will travel these channels and appear at the edge of the shoals to feed. Simply position yourself next to these areas and prepare for them to appear.

You will enjoy better results in flatfish hunting if you limit your activities to early morning, early evening, and at night in the summer months. Despite the fact that flatheads will take bait during the day, they generally won’t move far to catch it.

You’ll want to familiarize yourself with the water you’ve decided to fish, especially where the flatheads can be found so you can get your bait close enough to them to make the effort worthwhile. Make sure your bait is on the bottom of the river or lake. Generally speaking, flat cats eat from the floor.
