Techniques of Wado Ryu Karate

It is difficult to summarize what distinguishes Wado Ryu karate from other styles. The main difference is that in Wado Ryu karate there is no blocking of attacks as a means of self, we try to punch and kick at the same time as our opponent attacks. To do this, we use the principles of Nagashi Zuki, Tai Sabaki and Nagasu, Inasu and Noru. The last three terms are important movements of Wado Ryu.

Sensei SHIOMITSU explained the last three terms as follows; NAGSU, means like a flowing river, you try to swim in the same way as the river, so that as the stroke comes, your hand moves in the same direction as the stroke, and this is called NAGASU. INASU is like when you make a bank on the bank of a river, if you make a small bank then the water will change direction so that if you rub a little and deflect with your hand then the blow will change direction, that’s called INASU. NORU is riding on top of your opponent’s strength, when you are attacked, riding on top of your opponent’s strength and then hitting, that is NORU.

Nagshi Zuki and Tai Sabaki are methods of moving your own body to reduce the amount of energy required to execute your attack and ensure that you move out of harm’s way from your opponent’s attack. These natural body movements and the concepts of NAGASU, INASU and NORU come from the traditional Budo approach to martial arts. Wado has as part of its origins elements of Shinto Yoshin Ryu Ju Jitsu and sword fighting techniques from Yaggyu Ryu Kenjutsu and Toda Ryu kodachi. These traditional budo-style martial arts contribute greatly to the unique methods used in the Wado Ryu system. Grandmaster Ohtsuka compared the fluid movements and flexibility of the Wado technique to a “ball of air”.

He once said: “Defense and attack in martial arts work with natural ways. The movements must be like a ball, continuous and fluid. The movements of the ball are smooth, not contradicting or opposing the ways of nature. Techniques in martial arts must be flexible to change and other forces like a “balloon”. Regardless of the degree of smoothness, a flow of motion must occur. A “balloon” would be free to move from other external forces, it moves in accordance with its environment It can infinitely change its shape and form, therefore its surfaces and boundaries change infinitely.

There is form without form, surface without surface and boundary without boundary. These changes are endless. Like the universe, it is infinitely limitless. It’s like heaven. This infinity encompasses all things and creates peace. There is no such thing as superior technique in martial arts. Techniques must be endlessly variable and changing, just like the sky and the universe.”

Along with the above concept of fluidity and adaptability, there are three maxims to observe;

Do not use unnecessary force

Do not make unnecessary movements

Do not use unnecessary techniques to achieve your effect.

Many of the physical techniques of Wado Ryu karate can be found in other styles, and the manner of execution and intent make the application of these techniques a Wado Ryu technique. There are also elements of Ju Jitsu found in Wado that are not found in other karate styles, joint locking and throwing techniques are fully incorporated into the Wado Ryu curriculum.
