Medical Support Stockings – For Different Types of Support

Medical support stockings are also called support stockings, compression stockings or anti-embolism stockings, they all basically mean the same thing, but they can have different types of support. In most cases when medical support stockings are prescribed it is due to circulation problems in the legs. The legs have various veins and deep veins that bring blood down and back to the heart. Due to gravity, these veins also have small valves that prevent the blood from going up without gravity forcing it back down. As you age, or if disease or injury is present, these valves can weaken, allowing blood to escape back down your legs, which can cause pooling.

This can result in swelling, a dull ache that you can’t pinpoint, or perhaps a feeling of fullness in your legs. If after standing or sitting for long periods of time you notice that you like to elevate your legs and some of that feeling goes away, you may need to see your doctor to learn about medical support or compression stockings.

These types of socks tightly wrap the leg, allowing the veins to work more easily. Also, they can have graduated support, which means they are a little tighter at the bottom and looser at the top. Again, this is to keep the blood flowing smoothly up and down the legs.

Medical support stockings don’t have to look like they used to, there are many manufacturers of support stockings, knee support stockings, compression stockings and even pantyhose. With all the designs and styles available, you’re sure to find one you’ll like, and now some even come in colors so you can wear them with dresses or pants.

Many medical support stockings are also anti-embolism stockings, these are intended to prevent blood clots from forming in the legs that result in deep vein thrombosis. These clots can be dangerous and if you find a painful area on your leg or thigh, discoloration, swelling or unexplained redness, it’s best to make an appointment with your doctor. Clots in your legs are known to break free of pressure and travel to other areas of your body and possibly your brain, creating a true emergency.

Medical support stockings may also be prescribed for those who have circulation problems during pregnancy or those who have undergone surgery. These medical support socks come in such a wide variety that you don’t have to worry about how they look.
