Organic Flower Gardening For Beginners

Growing flowers organically sounds so healthy, both for us and for the soil. As a beginner, you might be wondering where to start? Should you study pH balance? Oh wait, that’s starting to sound complicated.

Let’s take a quick basic look at organic gardening for beginners. Organic gardening is simply common sense applied to preparing your soil for planting. You want good food to come out of your soil. So it makes sense not to pour poison into your soil or onto plants growing out of the soil. Organic gardens use organic fertilizer. This is the heart of organic gardening.

Half a century ago, manure was the smell of spring in most rural areas. The fact is that manure mixed with straw was the perfect food for growing vegetables. The smell was not the greatest. You can now buy sheep manure in convenient, easy-to-handle bags that fit nicely in the trunk of your car and easily fit into your vegetable garden. This is a great way to start your organic gardening.

However, there is an even better way to feed your organic flower garden, and that is compost. In a few weeks you can have your own compost and feed your organic garden with your own compost. What could be better and more self-sufficient? The end result is called hummus and can be purchased already made at your local garden center.

Whether you buy organic fertilizer, humus or make your own compost, it needs to be added to the soil. The rule of thumb is one inch of humus to 4 inches of soil.

Once you’ve planted your seeds in your richly prepared soil, you can wait until the weeds start to grow and start pulling them in what will soon seem like a never-ending job, or you can mulch your garden.

One of the best mulches is grass clippings. Pick up the grass when you mow the lawn (and if your neighbors let you) pick up theirs too. Cover the soil around and between garden plants with a sufficient amount of grass clippings. This traps moisture and suffocates new growth. Or, in other words, this keeps your garden moist and prevents weeds from growing.

As the mulch breaks down, it feeds the growing flowers and vegetables. In the meantime, there will be more mowed grass, and later in the fall there will be leaves. Continue adding these items as mulch. Your flower garden will be well-nourished and bountiful.
