Positive Training Dog – Training Techniques That Really Work!
Is your dog embarrassing you? Does he beg at the table? Does he pee on the floor? Does your dog jump on your visitors and growl at children? Does she dig up your beds or pull her on a leash?
Do you sometimes wish you never got a dog?
My friend Chet, the professional dog trainer par excellence, says that solving these problems starts with training your dog to learn to solve problems. This will drastically improve his ability to learn new behaviors and begin to eventually follow your commands. This is positive training that dogs respond to quickly.
For example, let’s look at two 8 week old puppies, neither potty trained, and we’ll show you how it works.
Let’s take one puppy and train it in the traditional, crumbly way. Every time he goes potty, we’ll try to catch him in the act, then grind his face in his own urine and/or feces, hit him with a rolled-up newspaper while yelling “Naughty dog! Naughty dog!” and then throw it out.
Conventional wisdom says that the dog will quickly realize that the crap in front of you is beating him and if he’s smart he’ll ask to go outside where he won’t be hit.
Could be. Maybe not. This is definitely not a positive training technique for your dog.
It’s much more likely that you’re actually teaching your dog to hide from you when he goes potty so he doesn’t get spanked. Chet had a client call him and ask why her dog always went behind the sofa to pee even though she swears she never hit him.
Chet doesn’t believe her.
The situation changes when we use positive dog training techniques. See what happens when we teach a puppy to solve problems for the first time.
First, we’re not going to start potty training. Instead we will put up a makeshift dog fence and keep the pup confined to this area. If he has an accident in this space, it won’t upset us.
Second, we choose a potty training exercise to teach the puppy problem-solving skills so that when we get to potty training, the dog will catch on MUCH faster. Again we create a positive atmosphere for dog training.
Chet begins by teaching his puppy the “go to the mat” game. He drops tiny treats on the floor every time the puppy comes close to stepping on his mat. The puppy soon realizes that the prize is what lies on the mat. The only clue Chet gives the animal is a treat he drops on the floor. You have to see this – it’s amazing!
The dog mastered “going to the mat” in a few minutes. According to Chet, once you teach your dog a VALUABLE problem-solving skill, the pup will begin to use this type of thinking in everything he does.
It is not difficult to understand how this skill will allow the dog to pick up potty training and more advanced behaviors much faster. It’s all part of positive dog training that your pet will quickly accept.
Don’t you wish you could train your dog to change all his bad behaviors? Imagine a peaceful home where your animal is calm and follows your instructions. Imagine him ringing the bell when he has to go outside and urinating only where you tell him to. Imagine brisk walks with your pet by your side – no pulling or jumping; no barking at other dogs or other people!
