The New Year Brings New Gardening Opportunities in Southern California

While January and winter mean the end of gardening activities in many parts of the United States, in Southern California it’s a great time to plant.

Plant fruit trees: Various bare-root fruit trees are in the nurseries ready for planting in January. Varieties include apricot trees, blueberries, plums, apples, pears, peaches and raspberries. Encourage trees by adding an organic compost planting mix to the soil to increase soil aeration and retain moisture.

Add the artichokes: Add artichoke plants to your garden. Plant them at a distance of 4 meters. They start their growing process in the winter and begin to sprout artichoke heads in the spring. This hardy, perennial vegetable can produce artichokes year after year.

Plant garlic cloves: Separate the cherries from the head of garlic. Plant them pointy side up to the cloves – and about 7 to 8 inches deep. The garlic plants will soon emerge from the soil and grow through the winter. They easily tolerate cold winter nights. New garlic bulbs with their juicy cloves will be ready to harvest in late spring or early summer.

Continue mulching to reduce weeds: Every rain (no matter how rare) means more weeds in the garden. Weeds seem to disappear faster than any vegetable or flower plant. To keep weeds under control, make sure you have a few inches of mulch wherever weeds may appear. If weeds have already taken root, remove them before covering the surface with mulch.

Plant wildflowers from seed: First, rake the bed area. Sprinkle with California poppies and other wildflowers and gently cover with soil. Sow more seeds just before the rains to encourage continued flower production in the spring.

Move live Christmas trees outside: Living Christmas trees should stay in the house as short as possible. Once planted outdoors, pines can easily grow 40 to 50 feet. Their strong root system will spread over time and can easily crack the concrete paths that stand in their way. Make sure you plant your tree in a location that can accommodate such a large tree.

Extending the life of poinsettias: Poinsettia flowers usually stay healthy until March. After March, cut the stems back to no more than eight inches. By June, new growth will begin. Keep the plant in indirect, natural sunlight and the soil moderately moist. When the weather warms up, take the plant outside and transplant it into a larger container. Prune as needed to keep the plant bushy. The flowers will begin to grow in October and reach the peak of beauty in November and December.

Buy a rain barrel: Don’t let the rainwater runoff from the roof go to waste. Many cities and counties offer discounts on the purchase of rain barrels. These barrels can typically hold 50 gallons of water–water that can be used to irrigate your garden.
