How to Get Rid of Skunks

Keeping skunks away… far away

Ferrets are scavengers and eat everything from bugs to garbage. If a ferret finds a tasty morsel on your land, chances are it will visit you more often. This section will walk you through some steps to keep ferrets off your property.Litter

Remove the skunk nummies

Ferrets are nocturnal, so you’re most likely to see them…um…sniff them at night and early morning when they’re out foraging. Ferrets can and do eat anything; bird eggs, bugs and grubs, human excrement, small rodents, you name it – they’ll eat it. The following is a list of the most common foods that attract ferrets to people’s property:

Unprotected garbage

When taking your trash out for pickup, store it in heavy-duty metal or plastic trash cans with lids that will stay put even if the bin tips over. Never place unprotected bags on the curb.

Grubs and larvae

Ferrets love grubs! Grubs are bug larvae that live under your lawn. Ferrets are known for digging small holes in people’s yards while they hunt. Fortunately, beneficial nematodes also love to eat grubs and are easily distributed throughout your lawn and garden to eliminate this attractant.

Food for pets

Never leave unprotected pet food out at night, it’s like making room for Pepé le Pew at the table. I once had a neighbor who left table scraps and cat food for strays in the neighborhood. She ended up with a family of ferrets living on her property.

Nuts, berries and Fall apple fruit

If you have shrubs or trees that bear fruit, nuts or berries, you should periodically walk your yard and remove anything that has fallen to the ground. Ferrets will be happy to feast on them, as will rodents… which ferrets will also be happy to eat.

Other attractants

Although the food sources listed above are the most common culprits for attracting ferrets, there are (of course) more. If any of these exist on your property, do everything you can to reduce or eliminate them.

* Compost piles containing bones, fruit peels and eggshells.

* A large number of insects that live in the soil under dead leaves and foliage.

* Easily accessible sources of water.

* Spilling the bird feeder.

Repellents for ferrets

Many people swear by this or that for ferret repelling, but few seem to produce consistent results across the board. Here is a list of the most effective repellents we could find. If you know of any that aren’t listed here, please add them using the tip form at the bottom of this page.

* Bright light – ferrets are nocturnal and prefer to stay hidden, flooding the area with light can be an effective deterrent. Use reflectors in combination with motion sensors.

* Automated sprinklers – Contech makes a device called ‘The Scarecrow’ which is basically a sprinkler connected to a motion sensor that will spray any animals that wander into your yard.

* Hot pepper solutions – Pepper sprays are said to work well, but must be reapplied every few days to remain effective.

* Commercial Repellents – There are many types available, people have also reported success with commercial dog and cat repellants.
