Tips On Using the McLane 101 Lawn Edger

There’s something special about the sight of a lawn you’ve just mowed and trimmed. The smell of freshly cut grass! A personal sense of pride! Just a combination of things that push all your other thoughts, worries and concerns aside at that moment. Indeed, time for a “good mood” and a moment to enjoy! To help you enjoy that moment a little more, here are some tips and reminders about using your McLane 101 Grass Trimmer.

1. Typically, you will want to set the cutting depth of your edging blade so that the blade cuts about 1″ deep into the soil. Setting the depth to this level should allow you to reach and cut the grass roots.

2. If possible, do not mow the grass when it is wet. Wait for the grass to dry! Edging the grass when it is wet does not give you a neat and clean cut. Additionally, washing wet grass tends to clog the curb blade guard.

3. When edging along the outside (side without posts) of the fence, adjust the angle of the cutter head so that the cutter blade slopes slightly toward and under the fence. Cut carefully so that the blade of the cutter does not hit the fence itself.

4. For cutting along professional looking beds and gardens, position the cutter blade at a 15-20 degree angle with the bottom of the blade angled towards the bed/garden.

5. When edging along driveways and sidewalks, push your McLane curb at your normal walking speed. (Note: When first edging your yard at the beginning of the edging/mowing season, I have found that pushing the edging 2 steps forward, then 1 step back, then 2 steps forward and 1 step back, etc. gives the best edging results This 2 approach steps forward and then 1 step back does a good job of clearing the cutting area of a curb blade along a driveway/sidewalk that has become filled with dirt over the winter.

6. Reminder: You do not need to mix oil with gasoline with your McLane 101 curb.

7. As with any other piece of equipment, it will be worth your time to read the McLane Edger’s 15-page owner’s manual before operating your edger for the first time. (Actually, there are only about 7 1/2 pages of easy reading. The rest of the pages are the title page, pictures, parts list, maintenance notes pages, etc.)

8. When edge to edge, you may want to try removing the spacer between the front wheels and then moving the right wheel towards the left wheel, then re-inserting the spacer to the right of the side wheels. This should give your edger better balance as you cut along the edge. Important: Make sure you turn off the scraper completely before ever removing the spacer/moving the front wheels.

9. Use 5W-30 or 10W-30 SAE viscosity grade synthetic motor oil in your McLane 101 rim. This will give you the best temperature range for your edge machine to operate. Many people use SAE 30 motor oil; but if you operate your blade using SAE 30 grade oil when the outside temperature is below 40 degrees, the blade may be more difficult to start.

10. A good habit to get into is to double check the oil level in your rim each time before you use it.

I hope you find these tips and reminders helpful!
