The Meaning of the Rose From St Therese
Lately, since I got my roses from St. Teresa, I’ve been wondering what the sign that some saint gave us actually means. Does this mean that God will grant our wish or have our prayers just been answered and yet to be considered? The answer to this question can be quite complex and we must always remember that God’s ways are above ours and that our job is not to understand Him first but to accept His decision with the confidence that He always wants good for us.
Saint Teresa was attracted to many different vocations from her early childhood. She wanted to become a doctor, priest, saint, apostle, martyr, and only after long hours of prayer did she discover that the foundation of all these callings is love. Basically, she realized, she wanted to confess love, spread love and act through love, not for herself, but for all of humanity and for God’s glory. She realized that love is her calling. She noticed that God loves us very much, but only a few of us show love for him, but our love is the only thing He wants from us. So, to make up for what we lack and to make God’s heart happy, she offered herself as a martyr who made all possible sacrifices to show love for God where we are not. She never denied hard work, never turned down any task, and never turned down any opportunity to show sympathy, understanding, and kindness; she was good where we were bad, kind where we were impatient and judgmental. She did everything to show God that people are capable of loving him and that his teachings did not fall on deaf ears and cold hearts. For her, everything was and remains love, everything stems from love, and now, after her death, she is ready to make huge sacrifices for love and in the name of love. That’s why she got the title: Doctor Amoris.
As she neared death and slowly succumbed to her illness, Therese said: “After my death, I will send a rain of roses. I will spend my heaven doing good on earth… My mission is to make God beloved… ” And her mission is to do God’s beloved here on earth. But how can she do that? How can it bring us closer to God, make us open our hardened hearts to Him?
As a saint, she has a wonderful and God-given power: she can intercede on our behalf by praying to God to fulfill our wishes. And indeed, with this rain, the rose decided to give a sign that it prays to God and that God responds favorably to our prayer. However, we must remember that Saint Teresa can only mediate, but she cannot fulfill our wishes by herself. Everything is God’s decision and everything is subject to His divine approval. In order to be fulfilled, our desires must fit into His divine plans. Therefore, St. Teresa “boldly declared that she would take her roses before God in heaven for his blessing before spilling them on earth. Everything is subject to His discretion.” (Ficocelli, E. “Bush of Heavenly Roses”, p. 26) And when our desires fit into His divine plans, when we gain His good will, he allows Saint Teresa to show us His loving approval with a rose. Therefore, the roses we receive in answer to our prayers come directly from God, and Saint Teresa is our lovely divine messenger. It is “a physical, tangible thing that guides a person as to what God’s will is in a situation” (Ficocelli, E. “Bow of Heavenly Roses,” p. 143), and as such, receiving such a rose is a largely emotional experience. After all, the divine messenger left it to us as a sign of hope and a sign of God’s love for us, His divine intention to say yes to our request, as well as a sign of Saint Teresa’s commitment to us and her promise. When we receive a rose, we feel encouraged, although we should not need any signs to have trust and faith; nevertheless, being human, seeing something that we can process with our intelligence encourages us, makes us feel loved and cared for. And once we see such a sign of love, truly a sign of hope, encouragement and mercy sent by God, we approach him, we open our hearts to him, we feel the immense love for him, which He, in his greatness, looks at us, understands our pain, knows us by name and has mercy on us. This is what a rose means; Saint Teresa prays with all her strength and heart for us and that God will grant us our wish because He can never withhold anything from His beloved.
The rose makes us strive for God. Suddenly we feel His presence and feel that we are indeed His creations, those whom He loves the most and whom He also wants to love, deeply and with trust and total devotion. Before such a love for us, we want to lift our heart to Him, snuggle into His cloak, be one with Him. One simple rose evokes the deepest and most touching feelings towards our Father. As the angel Elemiah directs us to say: “When I understand, when I know, when your secret face is revealed to me, my love – great and vast – will fly to you like an arrow.” (Haziel, “Le Grand Livre des Invocations et Exhortations, p. 45) What a beautiful expression: the rose is God’s secret face revealed.
With a rose, Saint Teresa signals to us when she is “doing something good on earth”. It does good on earth because it makes us happy by letting us know that our desire is taken seriously and that the solution we have been looking for is in the making and will soon appear in our lives. It also does good because feeling God’s love so strongly, we also feel a wave of love within us for Him and a humble confession of guilt for all those moments when we thought He had abandoned us. Now, with this one rose, we feel important again and feel inspired to show our love and great devotion to our Father who never leaves us.
This rose is a visible and undeniable sign that we so often yearn for in times of trouble and turmoil. It is a sign of hope that instantly restores our inner harmony and balance. We feel loved and love in return. That’s what Saint Teresa wanted. For her, love is the basis of everything, a feeling without which life is not possible. A rose is like a rose we receive from a lover: it is given to us to know that we are valued and that happiness is important to us, and we love our lover for such a wonderful gesture. The channels are open, and love is flowing.
The rose is also a sign of Saint Teresa’s love for us. She never gave up praying fervently to God for us and reaching down into the thorny thicket to pluck our rose. She chose to suffer for love; love for us, and for God, so that God is loved here on earth. Saint Teresa’s intercession is rooted in love. She spends her time in Heaven sacrificing herself for God and for us, so that the love between God and us can flow freely and abundantly, and we are convinced of mutual commitment.
