Girl Scout Songs – What Shall We Sing Tonight?

Singing Boy Scout songs isn’t something I’ve done much of, being a man! I guess the girls have to be more refined, nicer and more elegant. I’m sure they must be singing the kind of songs you would sing at church camp. The songs they sing must be quite different from the songs I’ve heard around Boy Scout campfires. Is that true?

I have two daughters who have told me what kind of songs they sing, and I can tell you that they sing the same songs that the boys sing. Maybe even worse! I think some of the songs they sing would make even a Boy Scout blush!

Do not worry; I don’t promote that kind of song here.

Whenever I ask one of the young ladies to tell me their favorite Girl Scout song or campfire song, the first one to say is Princess Pat. So here’s Princess Pat, along with a few other camping songs popular with Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, and other girl organizations.

  • Princess Pat:

This song is a favorite among girls. The full song is in The Great American Campfire Songbook. It is a song that is sung and repeated; The leader sings a line, and everyone else repeats. There are also some fun actions that go along with it: Princess Pat (pose like an Egyptian) She Lived in a Tree (arms in the air like a tree) She Sailed (wavy arms like an ocean) Seven Seas (holds up 7 fingers then forms a ‘C’ with hand) She swam across (wavy hands) And the channel (draw the channel with 2 hands and show #2) And took with her (throws bag over shoulder) Rick-a- bamboo. (draw a wavy figure in front as you descend, bending your knees as you go) Rick-a-bamboo (same as above) What’s that? (shrugs) That’s something she did (slams one fist against the other) Princess Pat. (Egyptian pose) It’s red and gold (one hand on hip, other hand up) And purple too. (reverse pose) That’s why they’re calling (hands over mouth shouting) It’s rick-a-bamboo. (same as before) Now Captain Jack (salute) And his mighty crew (salute a little longer) Have sailed across (same as before) the Channel too. (same as before) But their ship sank (shuts nose and descends) And yours will too (points to audience) If you don’t take (throws invisible bag over shoulder) Rick-a-bamboo. (same as before) Princess Pat (same as before) She saw Captain Jack (hand over eyes as a watcher) She reeled him in (reeled as if fishing) And brought him back (pats his imaginary back) She saved his life (salute) And his crew too (salute some more) And do you know how (shrugs) With a rick-a-bamboo. (same as before)

  • Little Miss:

I really don’t know how popular and widespread this song is. My niece taught me that. I thought it was fun, so I included it. I don’t know of any actions, but there are definitely possibilities. Here are the words: Music and chords are included in the campfire songbook. Little miss, out to pick flowers. She was standing in the grass, up to her ankle bones. She saw a bird and thought of turkey feathers. This broke her heart, she allowed the farmer to take her home.

  • I like bananas, coconut and grapes:

This is another favorite at girls’ camps. It can get really silly if you replace all the vowels with ‘e’ or ‘a’ or ‘o’ or some other vowel. There are 5 vowels, but you can also use different pronunciations of those vowels. In the first verse you sing: I love bananas, coconuts and grapes. In the second verse, replace all the vowels and sing: E leke benenes, cecenets end grepes. In the third verse, replace all the vowels with another vowel, like oi sing: O loke bononos coconots ond gropes. You can continue with any vowels you want to use.

  • Happy Wanderer:

Just a happy song. It’s great for going out, and it’s also a great hiking song.

  • I love mountains:

Just another happy song. Also an excellent hiking song.

  • Cannibal King:

Another very popular girl camp song. The chorus goes pretty fast, but that makes it fun.

These are just a few of the good Boy Scout songs. If you have any favorites that I haven’t included, please email me with your suggestions. I can always add more to my songbook.
