Exotic Bonsai Choices

Are you looking for something more adventurous in the art of bonsai gardening? If so, you don’t have to stick with the more traditional coniferous, deciduous or occasional fruit tree as the only items in your collection. Your choices can vary to more exotic varieties that will help you expand your skills.

An example of an exotic choice is wisteria, a plant native to Japan, Korea and China, which can reach more than 30 feet in the wild. Because it doesn’t conform to any of the traditional bonsai styles, wisteria can present an interesting challenge.

With beautiful and aromatic flowers that come in a variety of colors, such as white, pink, blue and purple, wisteria can be an excellent choice. Wisteria blooms in the spring and then they need a lot of water, but with adequate drainage. Wisteria does well in a wide range of lighting conditions, from partial shade to full sun. To keep plants healthy, give them plenty of fertilizer just before they bloom in the spring and again in late summer before they lose their leaves.

If you like fragrant flowers, an excellent option is Orange Jasmine, which produces bright red fruits and fragrant white flowers, bringing pleasure to the nose and beauty to the eye.

Starting in early spring and continuing through mid-fall, feed orange jasmine every three to four weeks. Except in the warmer summer months when a little more water is needed, in the rest of the year only light watering is sufficient.

Orange jasmine is one of the few bonsai that can and probably should be grown indoors as it thrives better in moderate shade and filtered sunlight.

With lovely puffy flowers and lacy leaves, the mimosa tree offers another good alternative. They are as fragrant as any of the above choices, and because of their long silky fibers, are sometimes called the silk tree.

Mimosa should be watered moderately during the flowering season, which lasts from the end of April to the beginning of July. However, care should be taken not to get water on the flowers themselves, as the flowers will quickly rot when wet, similar to a number of other flowering plants.

Be sure to give your Mimosa plenty of space in the display area as it will be one of the larger bonsai in your collection. Because they grow quickly and have large leaves, they are difficult to maintain at a very small size.

An additional exotic bonsai is the Desert Rose, which can transform an ordinary bonsai collection into an exciting display of color. The desert rose is native to East Africa where it grows up to 10 feet tall and produces large, pink, bowl-like flowers.

Requiring lots of fresh air and plenty of sun, Desert Rose should be kept outside most of the year. However, their very bushy habit makes them a good addition to a more traditional set of bonsai in your collection.

Because they are sensitive to cold, they should be moved indoors during periods of cold weather below 50 F (10 C). They will be quiescent but healthy when temperatures are in the 50F-60F (10C-15C) range and will need very little water during this period.

These beautiful and fragrant flowering plants will challenge your bonsai gardening skills, expanding your horizons. They will provide an ever-changing display as they go through the seasons, blooming in spring and shedding their leaves in autumn, adding interest to your collection, and when placed amongst more traditional evergreens such as spruces, pines and firs, they add a nice contrast.
