Landscaping With Canna Lilies

Canna lilies are a GREAT addition to your landscape. Many people recognize Canna lilies when they see them, but cannot “put a name to a flower”. Cannas grow from tubers, not bulbs, so they aren’t technically true lilies. Regardless, they produce large bright tropical flowers in dramatic orange, red, pink and yellow tones. Foliage ranges from light yellow-green to deep, almost black, rich green. Cannas generally reach heights of 3-6 feet and no single flower provides the same drama or focal point. Planted in clusters, cannas can even provide some privacy around patios and decks.

Cannas are even more exciting because they are inexpensive ($1.50-$3.00 each) and require virtually no care other than watering once planted. These hot weather natives of South America are great for landscaping in hot, humid coastal areas as long as they get at least 4 hours of direct sun a day. Tubers should be spaced 12-18 inches apart due to their size. They sprout very quickly and grow to full size.

Northern Delaware falls into zone 7 and Cannas will grow well this far north. Depending on soil conditions, weather conditions, and the distance and location around your home, tubers can survive the winter and emerge again and again. Mulching about 6 inches, after trimming the leaves in the fall, increases their chances of survival. If you don’t want to risk it, you can remove the tubers and store them inside during the winter in the basement or garage. Storage conditions should be cool (about 50 degrees) and humid. Allowing them to dry out completely reduces the chances of them being viable in the spring.

There are many varieties of henna, but among the most popular are red and yellow King Humberts, Tropical Sunrise and Tangelo (lovely peach shades), Cleopatra (red and yellow flowers with gold flecks), and orange Wyoming. Clusters of them in a large bed mixed with other types of smaller daylilies and annuals like marigolds create striking curb appeal.
