Use a Vortex Koi Filter With Japanese Matting For Superior Pond Filtration

Why are the Whirlpool Filter and the Japanese Mat so successful?

A biological pond filter, regardless of shape or design, is responsible for converting toxic ammonia to nitrate. Ammonia decomposition requires a lot of oxygen, a filter medium with a high specific surface area for the nitrifying bacteria Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter to live, and last but not least, turbulence. Turbulent conditions promote maximum contact between ammonia, oxygen and nitrifying bacteria, which in turn accelerates the rate of ammonia oxidation.

Whirlpool pond filters are designed that way and combined with Japanese mats are one of the best koi pond filtration systems available. The homeland of koi keeping and the biggest experts for this prized ornamental fish are the Japanese. In Japan, vortex filtration is used extensively due to its proven efficiency, low maintenance and reliability.

How does a vortex filter work?

A vortex filter must be installed as the primary filtration system before the pond water flows into the biological chamber, which houses the nitrifying bacteria. As pond water containing particles such as leaves, fish droppings and decaying organic matter is pumped from the bottom of the pond into the vortex chamber, the swirling motion of the water causes the waste material to fall to the bottom of the chamber. The deposited material is easily removed at a later stage by opening the purge valve. The main advantage of this filtration method is its ability to remove the vast majority of waste matter before it has a chance to mix with the beneficial nitrifying bacteria that live on the Japanese mat. This is useful in the following ways:

* All unwanted heterotrophic bacteria, which cause water quality and fish health problems, are removed from the water before they have a chance to contaminate the pond.

* Particles do not have a chance to come into contact with the Japanese mat and therefore cannot block the openings in the mat, resulting in an extremely large surface area being retained.

So far in this article I have discussed the benefits of vortex filtration. However, there are some drawbacks for the average pond keeper with a small to medium sized pond, up to 1000 gallons (US):

* Designed for use in large ponds by Koi professionals and will probably be too much of a kill for most smaller ponds. For smaller pond keepers, I would suggest a pressurized pond filter from industry recognized manufacturers such as Fishmate, Oase or Hozelock, as their pond maintenance products have excellent warranties and are designed to keep maintenance costs to a minimum.

* They can be expensive to purchase and difficult to install. When installing a vortex filter, it is important to choose the correct model for the pump flow rate you need. If you choose a model that is too small for the required flow rate of the pump then water containing particles will pass straight through the next stage of filtration. Larger models have longer retention times and therefore provide a much better opportunity for solid waste to settle in the primary vortex chamber, where it can be easily removed.

Having said this, if you are compromising the health of your fish by using an inferior biofilter, you may wish you had used a professional biofiltration system in the first place. Koi can be very expensive to replace and are sensitive to stress, unlike their more resilient goldfish cousins.

If you are looking for the best koi pond filtration system available, then the koi vortex filter and Japanese mat are the options chosen by many professional koi keepers. The design not only removes up to 80% of the solids in pond water, but will also remove large amounts of ammonia quickly and easily.
