The Cat Mate Cat Flap and the Feline Squatter

You know about an idyllic family life. Sunny spring morning; all the family are sleeping in their beds. Outside, the birds are chirping, which means that Clinton (the cat) is surely inside, sunbathing on the window or in her basket. So I go to the kitchen to prepare breakfast for the family. Clinton is first because she’s sick until she’s full.

I walk into the kitchen and see the tip of the ginger tail hanging over the basket. If you sit quietly for a second, you can hear the gentle purr of a contented cat lazing peacefully in the comfort of its cat basket. And then it hits you…

Clinton is no ginger!

I know it’s early and Sunday morning is no time to be with it. So it took me a while to figure it out. I moved towards the basket and saw the intruder lying in Clinton’s bed. I didn’t recognize this cat from Adam, but it sure wasn’t mine.

If cats were cars, they would score zero to sixty more than the best sports cars. All I did was let out a sharp ‘Ow’ and our unwelcome guest darted straight through the cat flap like a rat on rocket fuel from a freshly greased drainpipe. It barely touched the sides, which led me to the conclusion that something had to be done about that cat flap.

The one we have is a regular or garden flap that moves when the sparrows fart in the morning. It’s not a problem during the warmer months, but in the winter it lets in a good old breeze. Inertness means I couldn’t be bothered to change it just for my own discomfort, but I draw the line at sharing my warmth with a crouching cat.

The answer for me was the installation of a Cat Mate cat flap that locks when entering and exiting. That means they can keep Clinton in (or out, depending on how he’s been acting), but more importantly make sure all furry guests sign the register before they’re allowed to stay. I also get a double benefit because the Cat Mate flap is also draft proof, so I killed two birds with one piece of DIY.

The other side of the coin is that Clinton might be locked in, and maybe he shouldn’t be. That can be a problem for some cats, of course, but in Clinton’s case, he’s got the litter tray down to a fine art.
