What Are Underground Rivers?

We are all familiar with the rivers that flow across the surface of the earth. But, surprisingly, there are also some underground rivers. Do you know how underground rivers are formed?

There are many reasons that give birth to underground rivers.

An underground river is formed when the uppermost surface of the earth easily passes rainwater to the firmer soil structure. This water begins to flow due to the pressure of the upper water and takes the form of an underground river.

The flow of water inside rocks depends on two properties: porosity and permeability of the rock. Porosity is that part of the rock volume that consists of voids. In general, elastic rocks are porous. Crystalline rocks have low porosity. Permeability is a fairly general term used to describe the condition where a fluid can flow through a rock cavity. It mainly depends on the size of the gap. Groundwater flows along the path that follows the steepest slope.

The limestone rocks are honeycombed with tunnels and cones. When rainwater containing a certain amount of acid falls on them, an interesting process occurs. Water begins to flow through their tunnels and caves looking for a way out. As the water moves along, it wears away more and more of the surrounding rock, creating long tunnels that eventually turn into underground rivers. These rivers emerge in certain places and finally reach the sea.

This is another process through which an underground river is formed. When a strong spring cannot spring up, due to the solidity and compaction of the rocks, it begins to flow underground.

The distance such a river travels underground varies. In some cases it is more, and in others less. The famous French Rhine travels just a little underground. There is a famous underground river in Somerset (UK) speleologists have tried to trace the course of some underground rivers, but many of the passages are too narrow to pass through. In this sense, some researchers have devised a procedure. This involves mixing a certain color in the river water to identify it when it resurfaces.

Underground rivers create many deep caves and these are places for many unknown creatures, most caves are created by the flow of rainwater, rivers. Some rivers join the oceans directly, and some rivers in the middle of the land then join the ocean.
