Today I will explain how and why cellulite occurs and what you can do about it.

The bane of some women’s lives can make skin less attractive, and from what I’m told, it makes some women change the clothes they choose to buy and wear.

Cellulite causes bumps or an “orange peel” appearance on the surface of the skin. You will mostly find cellulite on the hips, thighs and legs, but it can also be found on the stomach, upper arms and breasts.

Cellulite is often accompanied by stretch marks. It is also associated with circulation problems, swelling and water retention (edema). None of this is desirable in any way.

Some women find cellulite to be a major loss of self-confidence, which can really have a negative impact on their lives.

Cellulite is not harmful and is sometimes called a cosmetic condition.

I know people who have painful cellulite that is tender to the touch, most people want to get rid of it for aesthetic reasons.

I believe that cellulite is an indicator of other problems in the body and is certainly not a sign of healthy tissue.

We will discuss the roles of food, exercise, hormones, circulation, dehydration and water retention, which all play a role.

Cellulite is not only found in overweight people, many slim ladies also suffer from it.

Even supermodels and Olympic athletes have it.

So what causes cellulite?

The causes of cellulite are multiple.

Anatomical or structural – cellulite is caused by fibrous connective bands, made of collagen, that bind the skin to the underlying muscle.

As the fat cells swell, they are pushed up against the taut skin, causing a bumpy or uneven appearance of the skin.

Cellulite mainly affects women.

Cellulite doesn’t appear overnight, it’s a long-term effect and it creeps up on you over years, not months.

If you have it, it’s because whatever caused it has been going on for a while. Gaining weight and/or increasing body fat would precede the formation of cellulite.

The things that cause cellulite are interconnected.

One big problem in the formation of cellulite is the hormone – estrogen (get ready to learn a lot more about hormones, especially in next week’s article).

I would also say that lifestyle and toxins have a huge effect on cellulite levels FOR THE SAME REASON – estrogen.

For example, in the long run, eating a lot of processed foods will – disrupt your hormones.

This combined with other factors such as lack of exercise and dehydration can lead to weight gain, water retention, loss of blood flow and cellulite will eventually appear on your body.

Fat cells are broken

Generally speaking, fat cells are not working properly.

Toxins need to be removed from your system through your liver. When your liver is overloaded, it can’t do its job.

Then the toxins in our food and environment are pushed back into the bloodstream and then absorbed by fat cells. In the long term, high levels of pesticides and other toxins mean that the body will NEED to create extra fat to absorb the toxins or “clean out the waste”.

These toxins find their way to fat cells where they can be stored for years and cause oxidation/inflammation (free radical damage).

Toxins are stored in the cell membrane, and the membrane becomes tight and impermeable, making it difficult to lose fat.

Cellulite doesn’t just affect overweight people, it can affect us all.

Many of my slimmer clients have cellulite and have body fat levels over 35%, they are what is called “skinny fat”.

Why do some women get it and others don’t?

It has been suggested that the collagen in the fibrous connective tissue (which binds the skin to the tissue below) may be a major factor in why some women suffer and others do not.

Collagen is created inside the body, and the main substrates (or building materials) for collagen are – vitamin C, proline, lysine, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate. Therefore, in theory, supplementing with a product like Collagen Formula would help reduce cellulite formation.

Cellulite scale or Nurnberger-Muller scale

The stages are as follows:

Stage 0 shows no indentation in the supine or standing position, and the grip test shows folds in the skin, but no visible cellulite.

Stage 1 shows no dimpling when lying down or standing, but the skin shows cellulite when compressed.

In stage 2, cellulite is only visible when you are standing, but not when you are lying down.

Let me just say that these solutions will take time. You won’t be able to just snap your fingers and cellulite will be gone. It will require patience, hard work and dedication.

1. Detoxify your fat cells by changing your eating habits

As we know, the best way to get rid of these harmful toxins that play a big role in the development of cellulite is to detox.

The primary goal of detoxification is to cleanse the body from the inside and flush out any harmful toxins in the process, allowing our body to function as it was meant to.

As mentioned above, some of the foods we eat introduce toxins into the body, which greatly affects the appearance of cellulite.

The first and most important step in removing cellulite from your body is simply removing unnatural processed foods from your diet.

So ditch the sweets, chocolates, fried foods and fizzy drinks for healthy organic natural fruits and vegetables, quality carbohydrates and lean meats. Drink a lot of water too! This will help the detoxification process and help flush out toxins from the body.

Hydrate yourself, drink a lot of water – about 1 liter for every 3.5 stones you weigh.

One thing we need to remember is that these toxins don’t just enter our bodies through the food we eat.

Toxins also come from alcohol, perfume, makeup, cleaning products and more, so try to use eco-friendly, toxic-free products where possible.

2. Exercise more

Cellulite is more common in the lower part of the body. There are over 90 muscles in your lower body waiting to be strengthened and toned!

As mentioned earlier, pills and creams don’t get rid of cellulite at the root, exercise does.

Effective treatment of the area where there is cellulite will help improve circulation, smooth and support the skin around cellulite; this will reduce the appearance and give a better appearance.

A well thought out balanced exercise program will really help in getting rid of cellulite.

Mixing quality cardio with resistance training is the best way, again, to increase circulation in that area.

You have to really focus on the areas where there is cellulite. Shoulder press will not help with cellulite on the thighs. Exercises like squats, gluteal bridges and lunges will – indirectly.

(Please note: I’m not advocating “spot reduction”. (spot reduction is when people want to reduce belly fat by doing sit ups and lose fat by doing squats etc, this doesn’t work, fat is taken from all over the body, not evenly).

The exercise is there to promote better blood flow and tissue oxygenation and to stimulate the surrounding muscles.

To give yourself the best chance, try to exercise 3-5 times a week, and it’s also important to rest your body between exercise sessions.

3. Massage

Simply massaging the worst affected areas can help reduce the appearance of cellulite, that’s why some creams seem to work a little, a base massage oil will do just fine and is much cheaper. You don’t have to worry about fancy spa treatments or spending loads of money, you can do a lot of things yourself or ask your partner/friends for help, I’m sure they’ll be more than happy!

Toxins are eliminated from our body through the lymphatic system; applying pressure to the muscles stimulates the flow of blood and lymph, which then helps the lymphatic system to expel stored hard-to-reach toxins from our body.

Massage in circular motions and be careful not to press too hard as this can lead to bruising.

Be sure to massage all the affected areas, if you are not comfortable doing it yourself, you can easily get a professional massage which shouldn’t cost too much.

So there are my top 3 tips to get rid of cellulite from your body, if you apply all these tips correctly your cellulite should disappear in the coming months and years, you should start seeing improvements in just a few weeks.

Keep in mind that the longer the problem exists, the longer it will take to go away, so be patient if necessary and if you don’t, I’m afraid to say it will only get worse in the long run.

Doing nothing is the worst thing you can do. Avoid progressing through the levels, cutting it down as soon as possible is the best strategy.
