Spring Gardening Tasks

Spring is the time of renewal and new life. Small tender shoots of new plants are pushing through the moist soil. The air is getting warmer and the days are getting longer. Spring is a wonderful time to get out in the garden and dig in the soil. There’s nothing like spending the day in the backyard to help you recover after a long winter!

Spring is the time to prepare the yard for the coming season. If you want to have a beautiful and fertile yard and garden, you must start work as soon as the weather permits. You don’t want leaves and rotting plants from last fall to get in the way of new spring flower growth!

The first thing you’ll want to do is remove all the debris from your yard. Even if you made sure all the leaves and dead plants were taken care of last fall, there are still a few that pop up over the winter. Those last leaves that don’t fall until the snow flies, debris that may have blown into your yard during a storm, all of these things need to be removed.

Use a small hand tiller or rake to remove leaves and other garden debris from shrubs and flower beds. You can also use a hand tiller to gently loosen the topsoil so the soil can breathe. Be careful of the areas where you planted the bulbs so as not to disturb the tender shoots.

Look at your lawn. Are there straw deposits? If so, you will need to rent a power rake or hire someone to clear your lawn of thatch. You may also consider aerating your lawn, especially if you have creeping grass such as Bermuda or Kentucky Blue. Even if you don’t have thatch piles, it’s a good idea to rake your lawn well in the spring. Raking will allow you to remove any grass that has died over the winter, clear out compacted areas and identify areas that may need to be re-seeded.

After you have raked, cleaned of straw or aerated the lawn, apply spring fertilizer. Most experts recommend light fertilizers in the spring, and you can find fertilizers that are specially formulated for spring use. Check with your local garden center to find one that fits your area.

Prune if necessary. Many shrubs and trees benefit from spring pruning, but be sure to know your plants’ needs. Flowering shrubs that bloom on old wood should be pruned after flowering. Lilacs are a good example of this type of shrub. They bloom on wood that grew during the last growing season. So, if you pruned a lilac bush in the fall or early spring, you won’t have any flowers. Shrubs like rose bushes bloom on new wood and benefit from a good spring pruning. A rose bush will have healthier blooms if you remove about one-third of the bush in the spring.

Spring is the time of renewal and new life. By spending a little time preparing your yard as the days get warmer, you’ll have a beautiful and bountiful garden all summer long.
