How To Make A Gift Basket For Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is an important day to honor our mothers. Many people do this by buying Mother’s Day gifts, but there’s a much better way to treat your mom!

Instead of buying a Mother’s Day gift, why not make your own?

Your mom will appreciate the gift much more, and you’ll save a lot of money too!

There are many things you can make, from bouquets, to your own Mother’s Day cards and more. One of my favorite gifts is a gift basket. They are easy to make and look great!

You will need…

  • 1 large cane basket
  • 1 large bowl and a guard
  • 9 purple silk roses
  • 1 pack of Pascall’s Memorables (Eclairs, Columbines and milk chocolate caramels)
  • 1 box of Turin Baileys Irish Cream chocolate
  • 21 Ferrero Raffaello
  • Curling tape
  • Roll of flat cellophane
  • 1 piece of patterned cellophane
  • 11 wooden skewers
  • 1 Dry brick oasis
  • 1 hot glue gun
  • Glue sticks

(Note: I’ve listed the candies I use in the list above. If you can’t find them or don’t want other candies, feel free to substitute whatever you want.)

Step 1: Prepare the roll bowl…

Cut the dry oasis to fit in the putty bowl.

Place the bowl guard on top of the oasis. This will help keep the oasis in place.

Now hot glue the bowl with the bow to the bottom of the basket.

Step 2: Separate the candies…

It is good to separate candies into separate piles according to type and color.

This will save you from searching for candy later.

Once you’ve separated the candies, set the biggest piles of Memorables and Baileys Irish Cream aside, for later use.

Choose 11 Raffaellos to go into the bowl for the candy bouquet, and set the rest aside as well.

Step 3: Wire and Tape…

Match and glue all the candies into two smaller piles of Memorables candies.

Take 5 Baileys Irish Cream chocolates from Torino and stick them together with wire and tape.

Place the left side over the Bailey’s Irish Cream chocolate to one side.

Step 4: Spike the candies…

Using 11 wooden skewers, skewer each Raffaello, then cover with a piece of cellophane.

Gently twist the cellophane onto the skewer, then tape it to the stem.

Be careful when placing the Raffaello on the skewers, because if you use too much force they may break.

Step 5: Wrap the basket handle…

Take about 3 feet of gold twisting ribbon to wrap around the handle of the basket.

Start on one side of the handle and tie the ribbon into a knot.

Now just wrap the curling ribbon around the handle and tie it on the other side.

Step 6: Start adding the roses…

Usually when working with silk roses you need to wire and tape them. But this Mother’s Day basket doesn’t require that.

Just push the flowers and they will be pushed straight into the oasis. Since the flowers are pushed into the oasis, there is no need for wiring.

Begin by trimming the stems of the roses to about half their length.

Then place one rose in the center of the oasis.

Like a clock face, place four more roses at 12, 3, 6, and 9. These roses may need a little less stem trimming.

Push them at an angle so that they are visible above the edge of the basket.

Step 7: Add the remaining roses…

Place the remaining roses on top of the oasis, at different angles from the central rose.

Step 8: Add Raffaello…

Cut the skewers on the Raffaella about half their length.

Push Raffaello into the oasis. Be careful to push only on the skewer, otherwise the candy may break.

Place Raffaello between the roses until all eleven are in the oasis.

Step 9: Add Memorable Stuff…

Then place the Memorables in the oasis.

Trim your strings as you go. The length you need to trim will depend on where you place the candy in the oasis.

Try to change the colors of the cover so that the colors are evenly distributed.

Step 10: Fill in the blanks…

Now we have to fill in all the remaining gaps. I like to use figure eight bows, because they are very quick and easy to make, and they are quite decorative.

When I made the basket I added 7 bows, you may need to add a different number but try to use an odd number if possible.

Step 11: Add patterned cellophane…

Take some patterned cellophane and cut it in half.

Crush it a little and put it on both sides of the candy bouquet container.

Step 12: Add more candy…

Now just take the remaining candies and scatter them over the cellophane.

Put some on both sides of the bowl.

Step 13: Finish the Basket…

Finally, all you have to do is take a large piece of clear cellophane and wrap the entire basket in it.

You may need to put a few small pieces of masking tape on the sides to keep the cellophane closed.

Put some masking tape around the top of the cellophane at the top of the handle.

Now just tie a few curly ribbon bows to hide the ribbon and you’re done.

That’s it! Simple, right?

I guarantee your mom will love this gift, especially when she finds out you didn’t just buy it, you made it for her!
