Mitral Valve Prolapse – Healing is Possible – A Case Study

Helen, (not her real name), a tall, attractive woman in her seventies, who was a vice president at her company, had a history of relationships with passive-aggressive men, which left her disillusioned and insecure. This is my fifth long relationship, she complained, and I recognize after a year of relationship, he is passive aggressive like my previous relationships. I assured Helen that she was not the only woman who was attracted to passive aggressive men. That’s how her work began.

It is my custom to take a medical history as well as a psychological history – Helen reported that she was on medication for mitral valve prolapse and depression.

The mitral valve is located between the upper left chamber and the lower left chamber of the heart. The mitral valve consists of two lobes of tissue that rhythmically open and close to allow blood to flow in one direction – from the atria (upper chamber) to the ventricles (lower chamber). The left ventricle is responsible for much of the heart’s pumping action and forces oxygen-rich blood into the arteries. Arteries then carry blood throughout the body. When the mitral valve does not open and close properly, the valves can slightly “inflate” back into the upper chamber during a heart contraction. This is called mitral valve prolapse (MVP). As a result of MVP, a clicking sound can often be heard when listening to heart sounds with a stethoscope. With MVP, sometimes small amounts of blood can leak back into the upper chamber of the heart because the valve doesn’t close properly. This causes a “heart murmur”, even though the heart itself is working properly. The heart has an adequate blood supply, even with MVP. Mitral valve prolapse usually does not get worse over time.

I was not surprised by either condition – considering her relationship with her family and her later relationships with men. Each time Helen left a relationship, she lost a part of herself and became more disillusioned and self-deprecating about her ability to form a healthy relationship.

Traditional Western Medicine (TWM) recommends that treatment for mitral valve prolapse includes:

Diet: Nutritionally complete, well balanced. Avoid caffeine and chocolate. Caffeine stimulates the autonomic nervous system and worsens symptoms. Avoid sugar. A rise in blood sugar stimulates the autonomic nervous system and worsens symptoms. A high-protein mid-afternoon snack is highly recommended. It is recommended to maintain a weight within the range of height and body structure – it is necessary to avoid fads and fast diets.

Fluid: Adequate fluid intake is important. Many symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, vertigo etc. are due to low blood pressure and low blood volume which can be alleviated by drinking adequate amount of water. A minimum of 64 ounces of water or non-caffeinated beverages per day is recommended.

Exercise: Regular exercise is essential to improve fitness and reduce symptoms of MVP. Exercise should be aerobic, such as walking, running, cycling, swimming, etc., and should be discussed with a doctor beforehand.

Medications: Medications may be needed to improve the symptoms of MVP.

In addition to medication, mitral valve prolapse treatment is indicated for everyone to maintain a healthy body. However, it is interesting that TWM states that medication may be needed to ‘improve’ the symptoms of MVP. One wonders why one would settle for ‘improvement’ when a cure is possible? Unfortunately, most people do not know that a cure is possible, because medical and pharmaceutical treatment does not cure anything. However, since TWM and pharmaceutical treatment are the accepted health model, everyone trusts this paradigm without checking other options.

Through the use of Holistic Healing (HH), we know that all physical dysfunctions are the unconscious mind’s way of communicating a message to the conscious mind. What does your subconscious mind want you to know about a certain body part?

The heart and the heart chakra is the center from which feelings of love emanate. It is also associated with other virtuous emotions, such as joy, happiness, honesty, respect, compassion, understanding, and generosity, and with loving oneself in a sincere, non-selfish way. In contrast, the heart often holds sadness, anger, and despair because of the many disappointments, betrayals, neglect, etc. that we encounter in life. Thus, blocking the love, joy, happiness, honesty, respect, compassion, understanding, generosity and self-love that were inherently intended to flow from one’s heart.

Helen embraced the concept of holistic healing and could hardly get down to business. However, she was happily surprised when I told her that mitral valve prolapse could be cured so she could stop taking her MVP and depression medication.

Although there were other issues that Helen focused on, for the purpose of this article, I will focus only on her process of healing her heart.

Helen readily reached a deep level of relaxation, and I instructed her to focus on the heart. As she focused on her heart, I asked her to describe what mitral valve prolapse looked like.

H: “I see a dark space.”

N: “How big is the dark space – is it the size of a pea, a walnut, or something else?”

H: “It’s the size of a walnut.” – I feel a lot of weight and pain. She rubbed her upper left chest.

N: “Describe the pain – is it sharp, dull, stabbing or something else?”

H: “It’s like a deep heavy dull ache.”

Tears began to flow from under Helena’s closed eyes.

N: “Take a deep breath – and exhale.” “I will count from one to three and when I say three, you will be at a time and place where your heart has absorbed your pain, sadness, despair, anger or disappointment to help you cope.”

Helen recounted several occasions when she felt neglected and disappointed because her mother was often away from home due to her inability to navigate adult life. Her father, although present, seemed preoccupied and did not discuss her mother’s absence. Helen handled the unanswered questions herself. With no prior experience or tools to deal with the experience, she pushed her feelings out of her conscious mind. Given that feelings have energy, that energy should either be dissipated or put somewhere. Helen put her feelings in the heart because they were connected to the heart. Therefore, her heart was overwhelmed. when any part of the body is overloaded, it will eventually break down.

As the sessions continued, Helen worked through all the instances of neglect, disappointment, fear, anger, sadness, shame and guilt. Her understanding, compassion, and self-love came into her conscious mind as the processing unfolded.

After a few sessions, Helen reported that the dark area with a deep heavy dull pain had disappeared – it turned pink with a warm glow. She reported that her whole body felt lighter and freer than she could ever remember.

I advised her to take the naturopath’s advice to gradually reduce the amount of medication she was taking for MVP and depression until she was off the medication.

In three months, Helen was medication-free, had the tools to manage life’s journey, and with understanding, love, joy, happiness, respect, compassion, self-love, generosity, and love in her heart, she set out on her path to create the relationship she knows she deserves. .
