Boxing Training Tips – Train Like a Pro!

Have you ever wondered what it takes to be a professional boxer? In addition to the courage to step into the ring, success takes years of preparation, dedication, training and determination.

Many fighters follow the “old school” approach to training that is passed down from trainer to fighter to trainer etc. They follow the basic principles of strength, flexibility, speed, endurance and explosive power.

Let’s start with endurance. Many say that boxers need the stamina of a marathon runner to last a maximum of 12 rounds. This is achieved by penalizing road works (running), often in the early morning hours when the air is clear and there is no one around. There are different accounts of how far boxers actually run. Some prefer shorter, faster runs (4-5 mile pace), while others will run longer distances (10 miles or more). I think a combination of the two is best for your preparation – long runs initially with hill work to build endurance then shortening the run and increasing the pace closer to the fight at night finishing with sprint sessions for speed.

Speed, power and explosive power are achieved through hours of work in the gym. A typical session will follow the basic principles of a general fitness routine – warm up, stretch, cardio, resistance work, cool down, stretch:

Warm up: This will include 4-6 rounds of 3 minute shadow-boxing with 1 minute rest between rounds. The purpose of this is to engage your neuromuscular pathways (practicing the activity you’re following so your mind and body engage) and increase blood flow and heart rate to prepare the body for the intense workout that follows.

stretch: Good stretching is important to reduce the risk of injury.

Cardio: This will take the form of floor work with your trainer and will actually include elements of speed, reaction time, hand-eye coordination and resistance work. (6 rounds +). This is followed by bag work using a combination of heavy bags (if available at the gym). Speed balls and floor-to-ceiling bags are also used to aid speed and reflexes. This is followed by skipping with a fast rope.

Resistance work: This should be varied and the exercises should be varied so that the athlete can continue to improve by being “shocked” into doing things in different orders and intensities. It usually consists of floor work (circuits), weights, medicine ball exercises and partner work.

Calm down: A few “chill out” rounds in the ring with light shadow boxing followed by a longer period of stretching to improve flexibility.

When the fight is approaching, it is also very important to have quality sparring because the pads and the bag cannot simulate facing the opponent in the ring. This will help you focus your mind on avoiding punches and train your body to take a few punches. It also gives you the final polish on your technique and sharpness before fight night.

This is just a general guide and will vary depending on the fight at hand, injuries and whether or not the boxer has a full time job, as is the case with many boxers on their long road to success.
