Demonology – Steps to Demon Possession

People don’t just wake up overnight and become possessed by demons. There are a series of events and stages of personal spiritual decline that lead a person deeper into darkness. Here are the steps to demon possession.

1. Regression – to retreat, shrink or regress. Return to a previous level, reverse a trend or move to a lower state. (Revelation 3:16)

To understand regression, we need to look at the opposite word – progression. If you’re not moving forward, you’re probably moving backwards. If you’re not progressing, you’re probably regressing.

They were progressing spiritually – reading their Bibles, praying and spending time with the Lord. But one day they were too tired to study the Bible, they didn’t bother to pray the next day, and before they knew it, they weren’t spending time with God at all. They soon began to lose the progress they had made. Their spiritual muscles began to atrophy and flaccid, making them easy pickings for demonic power.

To understand regression, we need to look at the opposite word – progression. If you’re not moving forward, you’re probably moving backwards. If you’re not progressing, you’re probably regressing.

2. Suppression – reduced and extinguished expression… joyless, lifeless, miserable.

Repression is an outward sign that regression is occurring within.

Some people have a problem with repression because they grew up in a home where they were never allowed to show their feelings. They may even be the type of people who wait to see what others think before telling you what they think about something. It is important for us not only to understand suppression when we see it in ourselves, but also when we see it in others.

Sometimes all it takes to turn things around is to go up to that sad person, hug them and tell them you appreciate or love them. Maybe all they need is someone to talk to. Just having a friend can make such a difference in someone’s life and can keep them from falling into demonic oppression and possession. If you don’t express your feelings, they will start to disappear over time.

3. Suppression – to abnormally squeeze, hide, as if to suppress information, feelings and desires.

Suppression is primarily something we do to ourselves for various reasons. Repression, on the other hand, is something that comes from outside of us. It is the beginning of demonic intrusions into a person’s life and it needs to be broken by God’s power. Suppression cannot be overcome by willpower or stronger attempts. It can only be defeated and broken by direct action – taking authority over it in the name of Jesus and then obeying in faith what God has put in your heart to do.

4. Depression – psychotic or neurotic condition characterized by inability to concentrate, insomnia and feelings of extreme sadness, depression and hopelessness.

Depression is a broken spirit. A person who is depressed is depressed to the point where their spirit is broken. Depression can be triggered by other forms of loss or problems.

5. Oppression – like depression taken to the nth degree. Oppressing someone means burdening them with a burden they are unable to carry. The dictionary describes it as holding stiffly by harsh and unjust use of force or authority.

Some people today are oppressed by demons who judge them, burden them with a false blanket and whisper to them, “You are no good.” If you are burdened by your past sins and failures, you are oppressed. People who have serious, long-term illnesses are often extremely depressed.

6. Obsession – Obsession is not always bad. Some people are obsessed with the things of God, and that is a good thing. The evil form of possession, however, can be a terrible and cruel ruler. A person who is obsessed is someone who is preoccupied with an idea, feeling, or emotion that cannot be resolved naturally. It is a persistent, unavoidable, compulsive preoccupation.

Obsession can begin when you believe a lie. One wrong step can be followed by another until you are way off track. Do not be deceived by any of the devil’s lies. Instead, look to the Holy Spirit to guide you in every situation. Obsession can begin when you indulge in jealousy. Hate can open the door to obsession.

Possession can come through being involved in some kind of sin. It means giving in to something you know is wrong to the point where your willpower is completely gone. An old Chinese proverb says, “A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step.” This is true of any journey, including the journey into the bondage of obsession. If you want to keep your freedom, never take that first small step away from what you know is right.

7. Possession – in which the devil captures the immortal soul, to be under the absolute and complete control of the devil. Your willpower is owned by the spirit that lives within you.

There are demon-possessed people all over the world, but most people who are troubled by demons fall into one of the six other categories discussed. In some of the other cases discussed, demons may have been involved in the mind and body, but not in the spirit. A person who is possessed has a demon or demons living in their spirit.

To get rid of demons, repent and forsake your sins, pray and invite Jesus into your heart by the power of the Holy Spirit, worship God regularly and read your Bible daily.

Pray now with me that I may sanctify my life and be freed from demonic influences:

“Dear Jesus, I give you my life. Forgive me for my willful sin and rebellion. Cleanse me with your holy blood shed on the cross for me. Thank you for dying for me Jesus. Please come into my heart by the power of your Holy Spirit who and is risen from the dead. Come blessed Holy Spirit and live great in me! Cast out every demon that I may be free. Have your way in me and make my life the way it should be so I can glorify You. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen .”
