How to Graduate to Christian Maturity and Leave Babyhood Behind
Three degrees of Christianity – Just as a natural child must grow through stages in order to enter maturity, so it is with a Christian who has just been born in God’s kingdom. He must pass through three stages in order to fulfill God’s destiny for his life: new birth, knowledge of the head, and knowledge of the heart. Most Christians never reach the third stage because they are stuck in either the first or second stage of the journey to maturity. You want to make every effort to get past the first and second stages in order to enter the third stage.
Why do you want to make every effort to leave the first and second stages to enter the third stage? Because in the third phase, the real fun begins. There you begin to walk in the realm of glory, virtue, faith and power that people only dream of. There you bear the most spiritual fruit for the kingdom of God. Where you get more people saved, healed and taught than you could ever imagine. There God’s peace, joy and love flow through you like a river to serve hope and life to people. It is a place where God’s grace abounds toward you to do things you could never do on your own. There you fulfill the destiny that God intended for you. There you grow in the fullness of Christ, the ultimate Christian goal. So let’s look closely at these three stages to understand how to move from Christian childhood to Christian maturity.
First stage – New birth
When someone first becomes a Christian, his understanding of what God expects of him is based on the knowledge he possesses. Their knowledge is probably limited to the basic requirements of a Christian: stop sinning, go to church, be baptized in water, read your Bible and pray. These are the basics that help lay the groundwork for moving on to the next stage, basic knowledge.
Second stage – basic knowledge
As a Christian spends time reading his Bible and listening to messages from local church pastors and other preachers, he begins to gain more knowledge about who God is and what Christianity is all about. The amount and quality of his knowledge of the Scriptures will depend on how much time he reads and studies God’s Word and how much knowledge he gets from his pastor and other sources.
Some verses tell him about things he can do through Christ, such as praying to the Father in Jesus’ name, healing the sick, cleansing lepers, casting out demons, and raising the dead. Some verses tell him what he has inherited from his Heavenly Father through Christ, things like power, riches, wisdom, strength, honor, glory and blessings. He could also learn that he is redeemed from the curse of the law that frees him from sickness, poverty, fear, want, the second death (the lake of fire) and a number of other curses listed in Deuteronomy 28:15-68.
All this knowledge is good, but it is knowledge of the head, not knowledge of the heart. There is no faith in the knowledge of the head because faith is from the heart (spirit of man) as written in Romans 10:10, “For with the heart (spirit of man) man believes for righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made for salvation.” We are not talking about a physical heart that pumps blood through your body. No, we are talking about your spiritual man, your inner man. Which means the same thing, the heart of man and the spirit of man are interchangeable.
So we see that the knowledge of the head does not give the Christian faith to heal the sick, cleanse lepers, or raise the dead. Head knowledge will not deliver him from want, sickness and disease. Only the knowledge of the head will not allow him to walk in God’s love, joy and victory in every situation. Head knowledge will not give him victory over sin. Brainstorming will not give him supernatural wisdom and knowledge to solve impossible problems. Master knowledge will not cause God’s supernatural financial blessings to come into his life so that he can be blessed and be a blessing to others. Head knowledge will not make him fulfill God’s glorious destiny for his life.
Since the knowledge of the head (mental assent) alone will not do the job, this is why Christians continue to have problems with their flesh, their sinful nature, and why they can live very defeated frustrated lives because their minds are not renewed by God’s Word and God’s Word it did not fall into their hearts and become their reality. They continue to live far below their divine potential, captive to the lusts of the flesh and without God’s provision for the victorious life that comes only through knowledge of the heart. Heart knowledge is what creates God’s kind of faith to overcome the world.
Unfortunately, most churches are full of first and second grade Christians who are unable to walk in the faith, power and strength of God’s liberating promises, never growing up in the fullness of Christ. They never became manifested sons of God to advance the kingdom of God. Why are Christians stuck in the first and second stages of spiritual development and never move on to the third stage? They were simply never taught how to enter the third stage or if they were, they lacked the drive to move forward. Assuming you want to please and obey God in order to move forward and fulfill your divine destiny, let me explain below how to get God’s promises to fall from your head into your heart so that you can move to the third stage where Christian maturity is an ongoing process from glory to glory.
The third stage – Knowledge of the heart
Jesus said in John 8:36, “If the Son therefore sets you free, you will be free indeed.” He said in John 8:32, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” So how do you get the truth, God’s Word, to fall into your heart and set you free to start walking in the power and might of God’s liberating promises that will lead you to fulfill God’s destiny for your life? Just reading God’s Word is not enough. You must memorize and meditate on God’s Word until you receive the knowledge of God’s Word, especially the promises that belong to you as a son or daughter of God. These promises help shape you into the image of Christ so that you can live a life of abundance and preeminence that is pleasing to God.
First, start memorizing verses that tell you how great your God is, who you are as a child of God, who you are in Christ, and what your inheritance is in Christ. Then, you must spend time meditating on these verses so that they become a reality for you, so that they become a rhyme to your heart. Rhema is a Greek word that refers to a spoken word and means “utterance.” A “statement” is when the Holy Spirit illuminates a verse in your heart creating the faith to believe that the verse is now true in you. Enlightenment, the revelation of God’s mighty promises, is what sets you free. Thinking about God’s word is what God told Joshua to do so that God’s word would pass from his head to his heart, so that it would become a reality for him: “This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but meditate on it day and night , that you may be careful to do all that is written in it; for then you will prosper in your way, and then you will have good success” (Joshua 1:8).
So what is meditation on God’s word? Meditating on God’s Word as defined in Strong’s Hebrew Dictionary is the muttering, thinking, imagining, meditating, speaking, studying, speaking, and speaking of God’s Word. The end result of meditating on God’s Word brings the knowledge of revelation into your heart, the spiritual man. God’s Word no longer becomes just words on a page, but a reality in your heart and His Word becomes a part of you. Then 2 Peter 1:4 will begin to manifest itself in your life as you take on God’s divine nature: “By which very great and precious promises are given to us: that by them you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust .”
Memorizing, meditating, and proclaiming God’s Word allows you to move from the second stage of head knowledge to the third and final stage, heart knowledge that produces Christian maturity. Christian maturity is an ongoing process, and your goal is to grow into the fullness of Christ and fulfill your destiny that advances the kingdom of God. The more time you spend meditating on God’s Word resulting in the revelation of knowledge of His Word will determine the speed of your spiritual growth.
Besides memorizing, meditating and publishing God’s Word, there are other important things that God would like you to do in order to please Him and accelerate your spiritual growth: baptism in the power of the Holy Spirit, fire and God’s love, daily prayer in tongues as written in Acts 2:4 and Romans 8:26-27, daily spending time alone with God to hear His instructions for your day, daily prayer for yourself, others and those in authority, daily worship of God in spirit and truth, a life of giving while sow your finances for divine harvests led by the Holy Spirit, sharing the Gospel with the lost and fellowshipping with other believers as commanded in Hebrews 10:25, living a holy life without sin and of course always walking in love and forgiving others as God has forgiven you.
Romans 14:10b says, “We (Christians) will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.” In this regard, we should always be the cause of the Heavenly Father, so that when we stand before Jesus Christ we will not lose the rewards, but receive them. May God’s grace and peace be multiplied for you through the knowledge of God and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. May your desire to know, love and obey God grow stronger every day.
