Wildlife World Mason Bee Box

Bees are an essential part of our ecological system. Without them, there would be little or no cross-pollination of plants, and without it, plants cannot set seed and fruit. They are the reason why our flower beds are full of flowers in summer, and without these beautiful creatures, vegetables and fruit trees would not be fruitful. By placing an apiary in your garden or yard, you will help bees to survive.

Red mason bees need a box filled with hollow tubes as an ideal nesting environment – cut pieces of bamboo are ideal. They lay down theirs eggs singly with a plug of mud between each and a supply of nectar or pollen to sustain the larvae. They like to use holes in rotten wood or thick stems for nesting; blackberries and pigweed are good rental homes for them.

The Wildlife Mason Bee Box is an exclusive, solitary bee home designed to attract non-swarming bees such as the Red Mason or Orchard Bee. These groups are particularly attracted to holes in wood and the Wildlife Mason Box provides an ideal environment that is becoming increasingly difficult to find naturally in modern gardens – we gardeners have become tidy creatures, but unfortunately this is not what most Mason Bees need. However, by providing a box we can ensure the continuation of the species – it is also an extremely attractive feature to have in the garden.

The special design of the Wildlife Mason Bee Box is made of durable FSC wood and can be placed in different ways:

It hangs on the back hanger

Remove the rear hanger and screw the box to the wall or fence so that its base is against that wall or fence

Located at its base

The box should be hung or placed with the open front facing down to keep out the rain. Mason Bees prefer their home to be above ground, so the box is ideally placed when attached to a post or tree.

The nest contains various sized cardboard tubes/specially drilled sticks which are ideal for mason bee egg laying. The tubes are tightly packed to resist removal by woodpeckers, which are natural predators, especially mason bees.

It would be ideal to place the box in a warm place in your garden, preferably facing south so that you can catch the sun in the morning. Unlike their larger Bumble Bee cousins, Mason Bees are happy to enjoy the warmth of direct sunlight. Once Mason Bees become permanent residents of the box, their numbers will steadily increase in the coming years.

They like to have a regular supply of food close to their home – if you don’t already have a bee cafe, try locating the box near where they will forage – flower beds, near a wall with climbing plants or even under a hedge. It is possible that bees will have lodgers – mice often use houses for nesting. If this happens, simply leave their nesting material in place – they’ll put it to good use next year.
