Kohler 5E Generator Raw Water Pump Impeller Removal and Installation

Changing the raw water pump impeller on a Kohler 5E marine generator is actually very easy as long as you can fit into the small work space where the pump is located. The generator is a closed system with a heat exchanger placed on top of the generator. You will only need a few hand tools to do this job. A new impeller is readily available at your marina or local marine supply store.

You must first close the raw water supply at the hull connection. Locate the pump, mine is mounted on the starboard side of the boat even with the waterline, yours may be on the opposite side. Remove the four 1/4″ bolts that secure the pump to the generator. The only thing you really need to remove from the pump is the o-ring cover and then remove the old impeller from the pump. You may have them slide for pumping part way off the drive shaft and then back into position so the impeller sticks out a bit so you can grab it with your pliers. If you have trouble getting the old impeller out you will have to remove the entire pump to work on it.

If you have most of the rotor blades on the old rotor, there is no need to worry. If there are only a few rotor blades on an old rotor, it’s a good idea to flush the system with a garden hose to make sure you have good water flow and most of the blades are out of the system. Check the rotation of the pump by touching the start button on the generator control panel and observe which direction the shaft has moved or if the rotor still has blades on it, install a new rotor with the blades moving in the same direction.

The next thing to do is to install the impeller in the pump. You should lubricate the impeller with petroleum jelly or liquid soap for easier installation and starting. The easiest way to get the impeller into the pump is to pull the pump out of the generator a bit, place the impeller on top of the pump and turn it in the proper direction to start (blade tips rotate backwards), then align the impeller with the flat(s) on the drive shaft and slide it into the pump body. After the impeller is installed, the o-ring should be placed in the groove in the pump housing with a little lubricant on it and the cover replaced with screws and tightened.

With the cap in place and tight, it’s time to open the water inlet valve, checking for leaks. Once everything looks good, it’s time to run the generator to make sure the whole system is working properly. There should be enough water from the exhaust opening of the generator while the generator is running. This will become a normal annual maintenance job for your vessel with normal generator use.

Sometimes these impellers will last several years with only occasional use, but most will need to be replaced annually if used frequently during the sailing season. Different brands of pans will have the same type of system and are very close to this process. One major difference could be the pump used on the generator, but it still shouldn’t be a large pump.

After performing this maintenance item for the first time and familiarizing yourself with your vessel, it should take you about 20 minutes to complete this task. The first time can last up to 90 minutes depending on what you will study, focus on and observe.

This procedure was done on a 2006 Searay, 280DA with twin 5.0 Mercruiser engines.
