Beware of Poisonous Trees Near Fish Ponds

If you are a pond keeper, it is essential to ensure that certain types of trees that are poisonous are kept away from your pond. The vast majority of species shed their leaves, especially during autumn. The last thing you want is for your koi and other pond fish to eat leaves as they fall into the water.

Even if the leaves are not toxic, increased levels of organic matter falling into or blowing into ponds is bad news; the leaves eventually decay to the bottom of the pond. Vegetation decay increases ammonia and carbon dioxide levels; nobody wants that!

Netting is a viable solution, but in my opinion it detracts from the overall look and feel of the pond; needs must in many cases however!

You might think I’m fine because I have a pond surface skimmer to remove leaves. Although a pond skimmer will remove leaves, it may not do so in time. Koi are curious, hungry creatures that will investigate any new presence in the pond almost immediately!

The right choice of tree species is sure to provide a welcome respite for your Koi, goldfish, toads and other aquatic animals from a hot summer day, as its shade prevents the water from heating up quickly.

Pleasant shade helps block UV rays, in turn helping to control the build-up of suspended algae and weeds. Colder water helps oxygen from the atmosphere to dissolve much more easily in the water.

When choosing trees to place around your pond, avoid the following or choose them at your own risk! Laburnum, laurel, laurel, yew and linden cause problems. Other species, while not necessarily poisonous, have large root systems that will eventually get in the way of your pond; poplar, willow and sycamore varieties are examples that should be avoided.

The following list is suitable for planting in yards containing a pond or water garden:

* Some of the ash varieties are a good choice because they do not create too much shade and their root system does not spread like a wild wire. The mountain ash has older flowers in the spring, followed by bright red berries in the fall that are almost overshadowed by the stunning red leaves. Japanese mountain ash produces large orange berries.

* Apple trees are a fairly small tree species that are a great choice for landscaping around a pond. The Japanese Crab apple and the fragrant Malus Pink Perfection are good choices.

* Other good choices are hawthorn or may, especially if you need something really hard and durable. Why not try Crataegus prunifolia for autumn colour.

* Swedish silver birch (Betula dalecarlica) is excellent if you are looking for bright leaves and bark that gradually turns whiter over time.

If you have an outdoor pergola located near a pond and want to add some evergreen climbers, avoid deciduous climbers such as ivy. This plant species is among the most poisonous of all climber species.

If you are determined to choose evergreen deciduous climbers, silver queen (Euonymus fortunei) is a great option because it grows quickly and hardly flowers at all; it occasionally produces flowers, but you can easily prune it.
